Week 15

Sunday 9th March.
Walk late morning and mid afternoon. As is usual on a Sunday the town and beaches are noticeably busier with many Spanish families enjoying the restaurants and beaches.

Monday 10th March.
E mail from Sandy to say no Canasta today as Hilltop closed for repairs. Shame, I do love my Canasta days!
So, a walking and jigsaw day!
Evening to film show at La Senieta. Film this week was Downton Abbey. OK but rather dull I thought.
To Chinese afterwards for supper.

Tuesday 10th March
Walk am. Sunny and warm.
Scrabble pm at new venue which is along the road to Calpe, too far to walk now. Michael has left the bar el Martillo  and he and Simon have taken over this much smaller bar. Think they have major money problems. A shame as it always seemed that the Martillo  was well placed and doing well. Anyway we had a good afternoon, I played one game with Sheran before we had lunch. Then Carolyn arrived and the three of us played then Sheran left and Carolyn and I had another game. N, Clive and Bernard were quite a while before they finished at about 4.30pm. As we left it had become noticeably cooler.
Back home changed into warmer clothes and went for a walk.

Wednesday 11th March.
Beautiful day. Went to pay for tickets to the Gipsy Kings concert on the 23rd at La Senieta. Then walked along to far end of beach, down the steps and back along the beach having a paddle as I went. Quite a few people sunbathing by the wall where it is sheltered, pretty hot in the sun.
Sat on the “veranda” for a while and and N joined me. We split up again and went our different ways!
In the afternoon we finished jigsaw no 2!
Late pm I went for a walk sat on the veranda again with my book and read and watched the world go by. Fascinated to see one middle aged lady, who didn’t look particularly fit, jogging backwards and forwards whilst carrying a tennis racquet!
Walked along to sea wall and sat again and N joined me, we sat a while before going our separate ways.

Thursday 12th March.
As it turned out the last day of normality. Went for a walk mid morning.
Left at 1.15 pm to go to the Chicas lunch at Maxims. Drove there as not within walking distance.
It seemed that there had been a mix up with the date and when Lyn got there at 12 noon they were not expecting us! Quite a panic and rush around and they did an amazing job of feeding us as our desired menus which had been given to them the previous week. I was sitting next to Pat, from Sale, Cheshire. A very entertaining lady who seemed to know everyone’s life histories! There was some talk of the Coronavirus but general opinion was not to worry and not a lot would change. How wrong we were!
I got back here about 4.45 to find N not here so I decided to go for a walk and see if I would bump into him. There was a helicopter ferrying materials from the car park behind Fishy Fishy up to the tower on the hill where they are doing some renovation works. Watched that for a while from my usual place on the sea front and then I noticed that the Chinese was shut. Strange I thought and went over to find a notice saying “closed for holidays. Very strange, when we were there he was chatty and never mentioned that they would be closing. Strange time of year to close.
Back home and N arrived, he had been up in the park on the Portet road watching the helicopter.
Later that evening the president of the U3A forwarded us a link to the statement from the local council.

We had been debating whether or not to go to market tomorrow but this told us that all markets are cancelled. It looks like things are changing.

Friday 13th March.
I went for a walk in the morning. Everything seemed very quiet although there were still people sitting at the cafes. The beach and veranda were almost deserted. I did a small shop at Iceland.
I had to go to the pharmacy to fulfil a prescription. There was quite a queue and there were 6 people, all wearing masks, on duty.
We decided to go and shop at Mercadona in the early afternoon when it is usually quiet. We didn’t need much as we should be returning home in a couple of weeks and we can get any other odds and ends in the town. Mercadona was busy! Not a lot left in the shop at all. No toilet rolls, kitchen rolls, bread, milk, (fresh and long life) eggs or ground coffee. The meat counters were bare and there were very few vegetables. Thankfully they still had wine and chocolate! After we had unloaded the car and I had parked it I came back here via the small Pepe supermarket nearby as I really needed some eggs. What a contrast, the shop was virtually fully stocked with no sign of the ravening hordes that had swept through Mercadona.
We learned in the early evening that all cafes, bars and restaurants are to close at midnight for 15 days.
There didn’t seem to be a lot of people around making the most of the last evening, all was very quiet in the bar down below.

Saturday 14th March.
We shall isolate ourselves as much as is possible over the next couple of weeks.
Very few people about this morning.
I went for a walk but kept my distance from other pedestrians. Many of the shops are still open but they don’t look to be doing much of a trade. Pépés was still well stocked, it seemed, but there were more people than usual in there.
I noticed that the children’s playground down below is cordoned off. I can usually  hear the children playing out there when I’m in the kitchen, it seems strange without them.
We heard, in the afternoon, that the beach is cordoned off as well as the park. Now only allowed out for necessary shopping, pharmacy and doctors visits. All shops to close apart from food shops, pharmacies and tabacs. Details below if anyone is interested. All made pretty plain. I shall really miss  my walking. Photos of a rather deserted Moraira, I shall have to look at them and do a virtual walk!

🚨⚠️
