Week 8.

Sunday 19th January.
A big storm, Gloria, is forecast to hit this area as well as the Balearic Isles later today and a red alert has been issued by the Spanish meteorological office.
By late afternoon the storm clouds were beginning to gather and the wind was getting up.

Monday 20th January.
It seems that the worst of the storm was overnight but the wind was still strong and the rain heavy when we woke up. By late morning the rain had stopped and the wind calmed down and people were beginning to go out and see what damage had been done. One of the stone benches on the seafront had been completely demolished by the waves. On the Ampolla beach there was quite a bit of damage in the seating area for the restaurant and planks from the bridge which gives access to the beach had been washed away. The sea was quite calm although large waves could be seen on the horizon. It seems that Javea  and Calpe had suffered much more damage than Moraira as they have much longer sea fronts with many shops and restaurants right on the seafront.

Tuesday 21st January.
Another grey windy day. The weather is still bad but now worse inland and moving up the coast. A lot of snow inland as well. I went for a walk in the morning and the area opposite the marina was completely deserted. Normally the bars and restaurants have plenty of customers at this time of day. N and I had a walk in the afternoon and now there are more people about. The seas are high and there were a few brave souls trying to surf!

Wednesday 22nd January.
We went up to the shopping centre at Ondara. I was keen to have a look around but didn't buy anything. We had lunch at an Italian restaurants in the food mall. We shared a salad and a pizza, a good decision as the portions were huge! Nigel sat and had a coffe whilst I had another look around and popped into the large Carrefour supermarket. We stopped off at our local Mercadona on the way back home but didn't need too much this week as I'm going back to the UK for 10 days on Friday.

Thursday 23rd January.
As I’m going back to the UK tomorrow, to Wells to visit Steve and family a busy day packing and getting ready for the off early tomorrow morning.
I had a walk in the afternoon. It is very noticeable here that the council workers are many and always "on the ball". There is very little litter about and the fallen leaves are swept up almost as soon as they fall. They have been very busy in the aftermath of the storm and I’m sure that very soon all the damage will have been repaired.
